PostgreSQL 18 has been out for a while, and it is what we now run in production for our own infrastructure. A few things we appreciate:
- Asynchronous I/O — the new io_method infrastructure finally lets busy read-heavy workloads overlap I/O, with visible effect on large scans.
- Failover slots for logical replication — the missing piece for building highly available subscriber setups without hand-rolled slot sync scripts.
- Smoother upgrades — pg_upgrade now preserves optimizer statistics, so a freshly upgraded primary does not run slow for a day while ANALYZE catches up.
Planning an upgrade to 18 — or off an old major? That is exactly the kind of work we do: planned, rehearsed, reversible. Talk to us.
